History

Pennsylvania's legislature authorized ski facilities at Black Moshannon State Park in 1961, and they were running by 1965. Skiers rode one of two tow ropes or Poma lifts up a slope of about 250 feet, with the lodge at the top of the hill. The state managed the area, sought a commercial operator as early as 1969 and leased it to a private contractor in 1980; it closed in 1982.1,2
Former skiers remember lift tickets of two or three dollars and quiet weekdays with the hill nearly to themselves. A park naturalist told one visitor that the lack of snowmaking forced the closing. The rusted lifts were removed in the summer of 1993.2
TodayThe former lodge is rented to park visitors as Cabin 20, and the Ski Slope Trail passes near the old slope on Rattlesnake Mountain. (2020)1,2
