History

Fernwood Resort, a four-season resort on Route 209 in Monroe County, ran a small ski hill that its golf course winds around. An old postcard shows skiers and a T-bar, and a reader guesses that a first ski day there, on a rope tow, came in early 1969. In its last years the hill had one double chair, two slopes and about 100 feet of vertical, all of it covered by snowmaking.1
Downhill skiing ended in 1999. The double chair and the rental equipment were sold, and the hill was kept for snow tubing, which was far more popular with the resort's guests; Fernwood began offering ski packages to Shawnee Mountain and Camelback Mountain instead.1
TodayThe hill is used for snow tubing, and its base lodge, the Wintergreen Lodge, serves tubing, ice skating and winter hayrides.1
