Mount Airy Lodge stood in Paradise Township near Mount Pocono. Built in 1898 as an eight-room inn, it was rebuilt in the 1950s as the largest resort in the Poconos, and in the 1960s and 1970s its guests could ski, ride snowmobiles, skate and play an 18-hole golf course.2
The ski hill lay about a mile from Route 611, between Mount Pocono and Swiftwater. Two double chairs, which visitors took to be Hall lifts, ran side by side, and many of the runs were golf holes in summer: easy grades, with one short steeper pitch near the base. A guide quoted by DCSki listed 25 acres, a 250-foot vertical, snowmaking, three lifts and no night skiing; a visitor who knew the hill doubted it rose more than 150 feet.1
DCSki says the skiing had faded by the 1980s as bigger resorts grew, yet readers recall skiing there in 1987 and 1989, and one says he ran the ski area from 1984 to 1988. The lodge closed on October 29, 2001. By the mid-2000s the lifts were gone and the lodge torn down, and in December 2006 its owner received a state slots license for a casino on the site.1,2
