History

The Nevele was a large resort hotel in Wawarsing, just outside Ellenville, that opened in 1901. Behind the hotel stood its ski chalet and ski slope. Guides of the 1970s list the Nevele Country Club ski area on U.S. 209 with one trail and one slope, a double chair and a rope tow, and snowmaking. They give its vertical as 220 feet (1972–73) or 250 feet, from a 300-foot base to a 650-foot top (1977–78).1,2
The resort shut without notice after the Fourth of July weekend in 2009. No source read says when the ski slope last ran. The slope has since fallen into disrepair, and in 2023 the property was sold to a buyer planning to tear down what was left. Fires struck the winter lodge in 2024 and most of the main building in 2025.2,3
