History
Written by aurora.ski from the 5 pages below, each sentence numbered to its sources.
Shepherd Mountain Ski Resort was built on Shepherd Mountain above Ironton, in the Arcadia Valley. The newly formed Arcadia Valley Ski Corporation broke ground on September 28, 1983. The first season was to offer a 450-foot beginner slope and a 2,100-foot intermediate slope with 325 feet of vertical, served by a Poma lift, with a reservoir for snowmaking and a base lodge holding a cafeteria and restaurant. Longer-range plans called for about six chairlifts and 25 trails.1,4
After a week's delay for weather, the resort opened in mid-December 1983 on man-made snow, with skiing on both slopes until 10 p.m. It ran only that winter. In January 1985 the operator gave up trying to reopen for a second season, saying a planned private prison project that was to have financed the resort had fallen through.1,2,3
