Shu-Maker Mountain stood on Cheese Factory Road off Route 167, a few miles south of Little Falls, on the north face of Shoemaker Mountain above the Mohawk Valley. Drivers could see it from the Thruway between exits 29A and 30. At its peak it had two Hall double chairs, a T-bar, a beginner rope tow, 22 trails, snowmaking and night skiing, over 750 feet of vertical.1,2,3
The Talerico construction firm, run by John and Frank Talerico, built the area and ran it from 1972 into the early 1980s. Two groups of investors and skiers followed between the mid-1980s and early 1990s, and Bob McEvoy's family operated it from 1991 until it closed in 1998. Warmer, less snowy winters, too mild for good snowmaking, ended it; NELSAP dates the closing to around 1999.1,2
