History
Written by aurora.ski from the 1 page below, each sentence numbered to its sources.
Eastman, a residential community off Interstate 89 in Grantham, formed its community association in July 1971. A new Stadeli double chairlift went up on the south shore of Eastman Pond in 1972, though the ski area may not have opened until 1973. Three trails ran from the top of the lift to the edge of the pond over about 250 feet of vertical. The hill was private, but lift tickets were often sold to the public.1
A 1998 study found that 68 percent of residents did not use the ski area. On August 27, 1999, the association's recreation committee voted to close Snow Hill and accept nearby Whaleback's offer for the chairlift. Residents sued to overturn the decision and lost after nearly five years in court. The chair stayed put at first, and Whaleback, which never installed it, closed in 2001. The lift has since been removed.1
TodayThe chairlift is gone, and the former slopes are reportedly posted against trespassing.1
