Counting who skied it…
The ski area at Winona Lakes, a vacation-home community near Bushkill, was called Kahkout Mountain. Karl Hope, the developer behind Shawnee Mountain and Big Bear at Masthope, built it, and unlike those two it stayed private throughout, open to residents, though it sold lift tickets to their guests.1,2

History

The ski area at Winona Lakes, a vacation-home community near Bushkill, was called Kahkout Mountain. Karl Hope, the developer behind Shawnee Mountain and Big Bear at Masthope, built it, and unlike those two it stayed private throughout, open to residents, though it sold lift tickets to their guests. It seems to have opened around 1972, when a Borvig double chair was installed.1,2
It was an upside-down area, with the lodge at the top doubling as the community center. About five ways led down: an easy out-and-back route, two steep advanced trails and two intermediate runs, over roughly 450 to 475 feet of vertical. A handle tow below the lodge served a learning area, and fan guns drew water from Bushkill Creek.1,2
By 2008 it opened only a handful of weekend days a year, and that year residents voted down, by nearly 40 points, paying to upgrade the aging lift. The area closed. The chairlift still stands with its chairs, though a 2012 fire damaged it, and the trails remain clear.1,2
