History

Flat Mountain Ski Area, which NELSAP files under Kidder Mountain, sat just off Appleton Road north of Route 123 in New Ipswich, across the road from what is now the Windblown touring center. The Koivula brothers ran it as a small family operation. Two rope tows, each only a few hundred feet long, climbed about 60 to 80 feet and served five trails. A visitor later found the name Flat Mountain Ski Area on a sign at what seemed to be the old base hut.1
NELSAP and Skimap.org both give its years as 1962 to 1967. One former skier remembered paying $1.50 for a day and blamed its end on Mount Watatic in Ashby, Massachusetts, which opened with a chairlift.1,2
