History

Glenwood Mountain Park Ski Area stood on Red Mountain, west of Glenwood Springs. Its one lift, a Hall double chair, was built in 1965 for $60,000; Riblet, Heron-Poma and Hall had bid, and Hall was cheapest. Colorado Ski History gives the chair as 985 feet long with 183 feet of rise, though its text also speaks of a 900-vertical-foot chair. A warming hut served skiers.1
The area proved too hard to reach, few people came, and it closed. Visit Glenwood adds unpredictable snow and competition from better-equipped ski areas, and says operations on Red Mountain ended for good in 1966. The chair went to the new Sunlight ski area in 1967 for $21,000, where it served a beginner slope for the ski school.1,2,3
The sources differ on how it relates to the older Red Mountain ski area, which opened in 1941: Colorado Ski History calls Glenwood Park a separate area above it, while Visit Glenwood describes it as the Red Mountain area under a new name.1,2
