History

Hanley's Happy Hill was an alpine ski area that Mr. Hanley ran in the 1960s and 1970s on the southwestern edge of Eagles Mere, with its entrance off Laporte Avenue. Readers remember two rope tows and no snowmaking, one lit trail for evening skiing, and a lodge with bunks that groups rented; one recalls a rope tow and a J-bar there in January 1964.1
The alpine hill closed in the late 1970s by one account, though a reader thought its last season was 1983–84. Rip Hanley and his wife Carolyn then ran a cross-country ski center under the same name just outside town into the 1990s, and began a log lodge for it on Route 42. The old slope was sold off as lots for summer homes, and the alpine lodge became a bed and breakfast.1
