Lakewood Village was a ski resort near Catlettsburg in Boyd County, south of Ashland. Abandoned, Sherman Cahal's site, says it began operating in 1979 on the highest ground in the area, with three north-facing slopes, two for advanced skiers and one for beginners, each dropping 340 feet. It had a rope tow, a T-bar, snowmaking, a lodge with a ski shop and an ice rink at the bottom.1,2,3,4
At first it was private, though guests of Carter Caves or Greenbo Lake state resort parks and groups of ten or more could ski. It opened to everyone for the 1980 season, when the resort counted 56 housing units, 40 of them A-frames, on 300 acres. A Boyd County High School club went skiing there in the 1980–81 school year.1,5,6
Accounts of the hill differ: an instructor who taught there one season in the early 1980s recalled about 400 vertical feet and two rope tows, a height MWLSAP also gives with a question mark. The slopes closed after the 1982 season; SnowBrains says the humid climate made snow hard to keep. Abandoned and SnowBrains call it Kentucky's first ski resort, though SnowBrains also dates Lonesome Pines near Lynch to 1972. In 2012 a DCSki forum member spotted what looked like a bullwheel and base-lodge remains in aerial photos.1,2,3,4,5,7
