History
Written by aurora.ski from the 2 pages below, each sentence numbered to its sources.
The area opened in 1962 as Sterling Forest Ski Area, at 581 Route 17A in Tuxedo, on a mountain known locally as Tiger Mountain. It kept that name for several decades and drew skiers from nearby New York City. After several seasons closed, as snowfall and visits fell off, it reopened in January 2007 under Novenogan Development, which renamed it Tuxedo Ridge; James Mezzetti later owned and ran it. Out of season it also offered paintball, concerts and event space.1,2
Four double chairs served seven trails, with a bunny slope and teaching area, many intermediate runs, a NASTAR race course and a terrain park. The sources disagree on its size: Wikipedia gives 100 skiable acres and elevations of 800 to 1,200 feet, while NYSkiBlog gives 35 acres, a 950-foot base, a 1,400-foot summit and 450 feet of vertical.1,2
Tuxedo Ridge did not open for the 2015–16 season, and NYSkiBlog says it has not run since 2014–15. Wikipedia ties the closing to legal trouble over the property after Genting Americas sought the site, hoping to build a casino nearby. The mountain has hosted the New York Spartan Sprint in June and lies next to the grounds of the New York Renaissance Faire.1,2
