History
Written by aurora.ski from the 2 pages below, each sentence numbered to its sources.
Little Mountain was a small ski hill nine miles up Emigration Canyon, which skiers could also reach from Parleys Canyon by the East Canyon exit. People skied near Little Mountain from the late 1930s, before there were lifts. The ski area opened in the 1950s with two rope tows, each 500 feet long, serving two runs, and a small lodge with a fireplace; the hill was a sledding and tubing spot too.1,2
It drew skiers from Salt Lake City in the 1950s, when few beginner hills had lifts, but by the 1960s other areas offered more lifts and facilities. After several owners found it unprofitable, the last, Cal McPhie, shut it in 1968 to open Gorgoza on the other side of the canyon, in Parleys; the Deseret News says he bought a chairlift from Alta for the new area.1,2
