History
Written by aurora.ski from the 3 pages below, each sentence numbered to its sources.
Tanglwood, first known as Paper Birch Ski Run, was a small family ski area at South Tafton in the Poconos. It was built upside down, with the lodge at the top of the mountain. Two double chairs and a beginner tow served nine trails on 35 acres and 415 feet of vertical, the longest run three-quarters of a mile, with night skiing on some nights, a terrain park and a tubing hill with its own tows.1,2
A reader thinks the name changed from Paper Birch in the 1969–70 or 1970–71 season. After more than forty years, the area did not open for 2007–08. New owners bought it in the summer of 2008 and reopened for 2008–09, but it was closed again for 2010–11, and readers reported another sale in the fall of 2011. From 2012 its owners sold off chairlifts and groomers, and DCSki listed it as lost in early 2014.1,2
A reader reports that the older Hall double now runs at Kissing Bridge in New York as the Tanglewood Double, and that the community's homeowners association bought the ski area and tore down the lodge after a fire and illegal dumping.1
